Joseph Hussli stepped ashore Ellis Island on September 12, 1912 and settled in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, bringing the seeds of our favorite heirloom pepper with him: the Beaver Dam Pepper.

This September, you can taste the pepper on many restaurant menus in the Chicago area, join celebrations and festivals in Chicago and Beaver Dam – or enjoy the pepper’s flavor in the comfort of your own home, wherever you are – just order online and get cooking!
The Beaver Dam Pepper was the first heirloom variety I unearthed after moving to the US in 2010 and started to work on Scrumptious Pantry. I was fascinated by the story of this pepper, by the fact Joseph Hussli chose to bring these heirloom seeds over everything else when he set sail from Apatin back in 1912.

Thanks to John at Stone Circle Farm I got to taste one that year and the flavor immediately got me hooked – sweet, spicy, but not aggressive. A late, lingering and incredibly flavorful heat. From that experience, the pickled pepper was born, then a Beaver Dam Pepper Hot Sauce and we’re happy to say that we will bring a Beaver Dam Pepper Jelly to you for the holidays. The BBC Radio just recently did a great piece on the Beaver Dam Pepper and our work to bring it back as part of their Ark of Taste series. if you have 5 min to spare, listen to this.

On September 5th, from 11-2pm, join us at Local Foods Public Market in Chicago for all things Beaver Dam Pepper – there will be a brunch special in the Stock Cafe, a special sausage by Butcher & Larder and we will have plenty of samples – including a Beaver Dam Pepper Bloody Mary!

On September 12th join the City of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, for their second annual Beaver Dam Pepper Festival. John, our partner in growing these tasty peppers, will be there with many fresh peppers. And we are excited to meet all the Hussli descendants again for this event that felt pretty much like a family reunion last year. It was amazing and if you’re in the area, we encourage you to visit!

We are SO excited that this year we actually managed to grow enough fresh peppers to offer them to Chefs in the Chicago area via our friends at Local Foods Distributors. We just started delivering them last week, and you can already enjoy the Beaver Dam Pepper on the menus of these fine restaurants and more are to come!
